Empty.  Even when it's full of consumer goods, packed with technology, and crawling with people, the city can feel empty.  It can make us ask whether there is anything more.

Or are we as meaningless as the autumn leaves, swept into plastic bags by the rubbish bin, denied even the chance to fertilise  the earth?

John, the spiritual guide we are hearing at present, saw that something more in the man he physically and spiritually followed for three years.  He commented: "The one who comes from above is above all.  The one who comes from the earth, speaks from the earth.  The one who comes from heaven is above all; he testifies to what he has seen and heard.  The person who has accepted his testimony has certified that God is truthful."
