Who are we?

eat, drink and be merry ...

Our philosopher decided that he hated life ... and then comments:  "A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil."  This is rather sombre.

However, he somehow moves on from there to find a spark which gives hope:  "This too is from the hand God, for without him, who can eat or find enjoyment?  To the person who pleases him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness ..."

It seems strange for such a self-orientated thinker to bring God into things.  But he seems to feel that spiritual life, true purpose, is somehow contingent on being connected to God.
