Spiritual life makes us seek conversations of meaning. In the hectic demands of the city for material action it can be hard to find the space for exploring ideas about being. We long for a deeper reality.
John developed as a sage by learning from deep philosophical conversations which he observed. One night a city politician came to talk with John's spiritual master, who said, "You must be born from above. The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
