inner life

Frequently, as I live in the urban space, something will knock on my consciousness demanding awareness of the invisible life of the city.  The storage, the loading, the rubbish, the air-conditioning machinery, the mopping, the ...

On Sunday the door was open to the enclosure where the escalator is being renovated.  It was absolutely riveting, just sneaking a look.  Even the constantly-used and very-visible has inner workings which are crucial to it's being what it is.

Is this why we pursue the spiritual?  Because we are aware that there is some inner working, deeper even than the unseen chemical, electrical and mechanical systems of our bodies.  Is there a spiritual aspect of my self which must be kept greased, and sometimes renovated?
